Macgrow’s Coco Block is a highly versatile, organic growing medium made from finely ground coconut husks. When hydrated, this compact block expands to create a light, aerated, and nutrient-retentive substrate ideal for a variety of gardening applications. Perfect for use in pots, garden beds, and hydroponic systems, coco coir is a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional soil and peat moss.

Every production batch is tested for EC, pH, and moisture before pressing at our facility in Chilaw, and grades are kept strictly separated — unwashed for general horticulture, washed for direct growing, and custom blends for crop-specific aeration and drainage. Blocks are economical to ship and simple to handle on-site: hydrate, fluff, and you have a uniform, well-structured media ready to plant.

Why It Works

Benefits of Coco Block

Water Retention

Coco peat holds up to 8 times its weight in water, ensuring plants stay hydrated for longer periods and reducing the need for frequent watering.

Aeration and Drainage

Its fibrous texture provides excellent aeration while maintaining good drainage, promoting healthy root growth and preventing root rot.

Eco-Friendly

Made from renewable coconut husks, our coco peat is a sustainable and biodegradable alternative to peat moss.

pH Balanced

Naturally neutral pH, making it suitable for a wide range of plants without requiring pH adjustments.

Nutrient Retention

Coco peat retains nutrients effectively, ensuring they are readily available for plant roots, boosting growth and vitality.

Coco Block — FAQs

How much water does a 5 kg block need to expand?

Roughly 25–30 litres. Add water gradually, allow 30–45 minutes for full absorption, then break the block apart and fluff. Expanded volume is 65–75 litres depending on grade.

Can I get specific chip-to-peat blends?

Yes. We compress blocks in custom blends — for example 70/30 or 50/50 peat-to-husk-chip — to tune aeration and drainage for your crop.

What is the difference between washed and buffered blocks?

Washed blocks are rinsed with fresh water to reduce soluble salts. Buffered blocks are additionally treated with calcium nitrate to displace bound sodium and potassium, which matters for salt-sensitive crops such as strawberries and young ornamentals.

How are blocks packed for export?

Blocks are typically palletised and stretch-wrapped, or floor-loaded for maximum container utilisation. Each block can be individually labelled or wrapped to your branding.
